South Fallsburg Rail Trail

This 1.1 mile segment of trail was designed to by-pass the Fallsburg Tunnel – a 1,123 foot long brick tunnel constructed in 1886 as part of the historic Ontario & Western (O&W) Railroad.

Public access through the tunnel is prohibited and dangerous due to the partial collapse of several steel plates supporting the underground structure. However, this trail will take you up and over Tunnel Hill to the northwest entrance to the tunnel where you can view this piece of railroad history from a safe distance.

The trail can be accessed via a trailhead near the corner of Old Country Road and Dogpatch Road (off Lake Street) in South Fallsburg. There you will find plenty of parking, along with a dog park, soccer field, playground, and picnic area.

This trail is not flat like the rest of the O&W Rail Trail, so be prepared to tackle some hills and moderately steep grades. You will find a picnic area at the half-way point if you need to rest.

Future plans include completing the “last mile” of trail along the former O&W railroad bed from the tunnel entrance to a proposed pedestrian bridge over the Neversink River. That bridge (expected to be completed in 2026) will connect 13 miles of publicly accessible rail-trail from one end of Fallsburg to the other.
